Dear Members,
This weekend Saturday 3rd, Sunday 4th & Monday 5th September 2022 sees a return of the Steelscene Mandurah Amateur Open and we thank Gary and Jonnine James from Steelscene as well as The Sebel Hotel for their support.
This has always been the strongest Amateur event in Western Australia and the Committee has been very eager to relaunch after COVID with it being a mixed event, which gives some of the best female amateur golfers in the country an opportunity to compete in this highly regarded golf tournament. With around 110 players and more than half on a scratch handicap or better, it will be an outstanding field and members are encouraged to come and watch some of the best golfers in the country. (scroll to bottom of page for the Draw for Saturday and Sunday)
The course will be open for member social play in the afternoon on Saturday and Sunday whilst Monday will remain closed for the 36 hole final day.
Not only does Mandurah play host to some of the best Amateur golfing events, we then host one of the highlights on the female social golfing calendar in Western Australia, the Ladies Spring Carnival. This will take place on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th September 2022 with the fantastic Ladies performances to go well into the nights! There is a huge amount of work that goes into this event and we thank all those ladies involved in supporting their club.
On the 12th September 2022 , the course will close for four days as we go into the annual course renovation period, with an update from Greens Chair Dean Stewart to be forwarded later this week. The clubhouse will close for at least the Monday and Tuesday as we take the opportunity to undergo our Spring clean and maintenance.
Depending on timing of contractors, we are hopeful to undertake an installation of Solar for the clubhouse over this period too, if not soon after. This has been on the Club’s agenda for some time and the Committee is pleased to have the logistics of this underway.
As you may be aware, Barry Price will soon retire. We are hopeful that Barry will stay on to continue some casual work, but we know he is looking forward to a well-earned rest. Barry has been with us for just over three years and came on board to start the Golf Shop and work closely with Gary for a smooth transition after the clubhouse redevelopment. It is obvious when guests arrive from other clubs and the comments made, that the MCC Golf Shop is one of the best in WA and the work from the golf team has been outstanding, lead by Barry.
It is a commitment of the Committee to provide not just a great facility but excellent services and with a team of Barry, Gary, Jo, Tappie, Braden and Kat, we are fortunate to have an outstanding team and Barry’s work in pulling this together has been fantastic.
The Club has appointed a new Golf Manager Todd Bergersen. Todd was a member many years ago playing representative golf for MCC, but has spent the last 15 years as the Golf Manager at The Cut. We know the members of The Cut are very sorry to lose such an outstanding employee but we are fortunate he is looking to start a new chapter. Todd has great strength in the back of house running of our golf systems and we saw that as a priority in his appointment, given this was core to run our member golf services. Todd will start during the course renovation period and we look forward to having him as part of our community.
We have a very busy schedule and unfortunately we can’t shake COVID, losing some key staff over this recent period, but we thank the team for continuing to cover the losses and together with our members, showcase the club for some fantastic events over the next few weeks.
Regards
Grant Shortland-Jones, General Manager
