Dear Members,
After months of preparation and planning, the 100th Anniversary of the Bowra and O’dea Nexus Advisernet WA Open 2024 has come and gone, and what a week it was.
It was great to see a huge crowd of members witness some magnificent golf in beautiful weather, through to the last day to finish in a major storm, with the most dramatic finish. Firstly, by Jak Carter on the 18th hole to hit a 4 iron to just a metre to make birdie to force a playoff, an epic shot. Only then for Elvis Smylie to hit his approach in the playoff on the 18th to less than a metre, to take the title.
To Stewart Poole and his course team, there was nothing but constant praise by the PGA Tour Australasia, Golf WA and most importantly, the players were highly complimentary about the quality of the golf course. Considering the difficult winter and limited preparation time in Spring, it takes a standout person to produce a course that was presented to that standard. We are extremely fortunate to have Stewart at the Club, supported by Jarrod and the team. Well done and thank you.
To Grant Shortland-Jones and his amazing staff, who worked tirelessly before the event, from 5am to late every day for the week, we thank you. The comments by all visitors and especially the Golf WA Chief Executive, Gary Thomas, who runs this event annually, had great praise on the quality of everything provided to them and their guests. He received nothing but praise from all sponsors and his guests.
To the members that were engaged, and supported the event, it was obvious you all had a great time, and we are pleased you enjoyed it. The Saturday member function was a highlight, with 170 people enjoying the most fantastic day – beautiful food and drinks, live music and being able to view the golf from the balcony.
Most importantly our volunteers, lead by volunteer Barry Price. You all made the event possible and worked in very tough conditions at times, especially Sunday afternoon. We hope you enjoyed being a part of it, and we all extend our thanks to your commitment to making the event what it was.
To be given the privilege to host the 100th anniversary, shows the confidence by the various Golf Governing Bodies in us as a Club. They have expressed congratulations to you all in what we have delivered.
The Mandurah Country Club has an outstanding reputation within the industry for those who know what we do, how we do it and what is provided to members. The exposure from the Open is now far reaching, and as members you should be very proud of what we have achieved.
Many thanks again
Ron Stone, President
